The Pirates scored nine runs in the first inning but blew two separate nine-run leads in a 17-16 meltdown to the Rockies that snapped a five-game winning streak tonight at Coors Field.
Major League Baseball's worst team scored five runs off DennisSantana in the ninth inning, capped by two on a walk-off home run by BrentonDoyle, and seven runs over the final two innings. They became the first team in history to allow 15-plus runs, allow a nine-run inning and face a nine-run deficit and still win the same game. AndrewHeaney allowed four runs (three earned) over 3 1/3 innings before ThomasHarrington allowed six runs on seven hits in 2/3 of an inning, YohanRamirez two runs in two innings.
Everyone in the Pirates' lineup had at least one hit, aside from JoeyBart, who reached base five times and finished with four walks, becoming the first Pirates catcher since RyanDoumit in 2007 to accomplish the latter feat. NickGonzales finished with four of the Pirates' 18 hits. AndrewMcCutchen had three hits and drove in five runs, while BryanReynolds and Isiah Kiner-Falefa also contributed with three-hit efforts. OneilCruz had two hits, including a first-inning grand slam.
"I think we're at a turning point right now, especially with what happened today," Gonzales said. "We can either cower, or punch them back. We do that, win tomorrow, win the next day and take the series. Then we'll just be looking back on this thinking, 'Whatever.' "
